The Weight of Ashes
Manifestations of energy and transformation of matter
The weight of the ashes is a video project made the night of the « Cremà » in Valencia during the popular festival of the Fallas. The city burns during the night of March 19. The more than 700 bonfires inflame the different sculptures created throughout the year by the associations of residents of the citybringing many visitors from all over the world. How much energy is released from the faults? How much does their ashes weigh?
Could the high entropy in the process of transformation of matter be a prophetic image, an allegory of collapse or of the death throes of our world? How much energy is released when fallas are burned?.Duchamp invented a concept called infrathin (inframince) to measure the barely perceptible energy (of the immaterial) which is wasted in minor everyday situations or actions (the warmth of a recently vacated chair). The weight of ashes is to be found between these two concepts, between small and large, between the material and the immaterial, between the local and the global.

El peso de las cenizas es un proyecto de vídeo realizado durante la noche de la “Cremà” en Valencia, en el marco de la fiesta popular de las Fallas. La ciudad arde en la noche del 19 de marzo. Más de 700 hogueras incendian las distintas esculturas creadas a lo largo del año por las asociaciones vecinales de la ciudad, atrayendo a numerosos visitantes de todo el mundo. ¿Cuánta energía desprenden las Fallas? ¿Cuánto pesan sus cenizas?
Podría la alta entropía presente en el proceso de transformación de la materia ser una imagen profética, una alegoría del colapso o de la agonía de nuestro mundo? Qué cantidad de energía se libera cuando se queman las Fallas? Duchamp inventó un concepto llamado infraleve (inframince) para medir la energía apenas perceptible (de lo inmaterial) que se desperdicia en situaciones o acciones cotidianas menores (como el calor de una silla recién abandonada). El peso de las cenizas se sitúa entre estos dos conceptos: entre lo pequeño y lo grande, entre lo material y lo inmaterial, entre lo local y lo global.
