Escaparates – 2008-2009

The images of Escaparates (shop windows) concentrate on the visual device of the shop window, and identify with it, stripping away its customary usage and instead presenting it as a vehicle for contemplation. The focus of the work is the windows of Parisian businesses that are closing down; they are whitewashed, preventing any clear views of the interior. Thus, the viewer’s gaze can switch to a reflection of the city as well as the physical borders of the windows themselves, inscribed with the marks of past activity. The tensions of the city are embodied within the form of an abstraction in these large images, which may therefore be viewed with remoteness.

Les images de Escaparates (Vitrines) se concentrent sur un dispositif de vision – la vitrine – et s’identifient à celui-ci pour annuler son usage et l’utiliser comme le véhicule d’une réflexion. Il s’agit de vitrines de commerces condamnées à Paris, recouvertes avec de la peinture de blanc d’Espagne qui empêche de voir clairement l’intérieur. Le regard rebondit vers le reflet de la ville ainsi qu’à la frontière matérielle de la vitre recouverte d’inscriptions. La tension de la ville s’incarne alors sous a forme d’une abstraction dans ces grandes images que nous pouvons aussi regarder avec distance.
